The 2026 Anzac Day commemorative services at Gallipoli will be held on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 April. Further information about the services, what to expect at Gallipoli, and what to bring, is available on the Australian Government's Anzac Day Gallipoli events webpage.
New Zealanders attending the 2026 Anzac Day services at Gallipoli will require an attendance pass. Passes can be obtained by registering on the Overseas Commemorations Website.
Due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, there have been widespread airspace closures, flight cancellations, and significant disruption to international travel.
We strongly advise New Zealanders do not travel (Level 4 of 4) to most of the Middle East, including for transit or layovers. Even if you do not plan to leave the airport, you should not transit through the Middle East.
For more information on the Middle East security situation, please see our news item.
All New Zealanders planning to attend the Gallipoli Anzac Day Commemorative Services are encouraged to:
The Gallipoli Peninsula is approximately a four hour drive from Istanbul. The nearest towns to the commemorative sites are:
The Peninsula is a national park, and there is no public transport to the commemorative sites. Private vehicle access to the Peninsula is heavily restricted during Anzac Day. It is strongly recommended that you book in advance as part of an organised bus tour to travel to and from the sites.
Security and crowd management at the commemorations are the responsibility of local security authorities. If you attend, you will be required to pass through airport-style security screening at site entrances, including bag searches. You should follow the instructions of security staff at all times.
Local health authorities provide limited medical support at the commemorative sites. This support is intended for medical emergencies rather than minor ailments. Bring your own basic first aid supplies (such as sunscreen, band-aids, and paracetamol), as these are not provided. Ensure you have comprehensive medical insurance before travelling overseas.
Facilities for persons with disabilities or restricted mobility are not generally available in Türkiye. Before organising your trip, you should contact a travel agent, tour operator, or the local tourism authority to confirm whether transport, accommodation, and attractions can meet your needs.
For this region of Türkiye, we advise New Zealanders to exercise increased caution (level 2 of 4). Read our full travel advice for Türkiye for further details.
Our advice notes there are areas in south-eastern Türkiye where we recommend New Zealanders avoid non-essential travel, and areas along the Syrian border where we advise New Zealanders do not travel.
Elsewhere in Türkiye, including Ankara, Istanbul and the Gallipoli Peninsula, exercise increased caution due to the heightened threat of terrorism and the potential for civil unrest.
New Zealanders in Türkiye are advised to avoid all political gatherings, protests and demonstrations, as even those intended to be peaceful can escalate and result in violence. You should comply with any instructions and restrictions issued by local authorities, including curfews, which may be imposed or extended with little warning.
There continues to be a high threat of terrorism in Türkiye. Isolated terrorist attacks by various groups or individuals have occurred in October 2023 (Ankara), January and February 2024 (Istanbul), and October 2024 (Ankara).
New Zealanders throughout Türkiye are advised to remain alert and informed about potential risks to safety and security by monitoring local media and other reliable information sources. Follow any instructions issued by local authorities and exercise a high degree of vigilance in public places, particularly around government buildings and sites associated with Turkish security forces.
Be security conscious around landmarks and places known to be frequented by foreigners, including embassies, tourist locations, shopping malls, entertainment areas, public transport hubs, airports, hotels, nightclubs, restaurants, places of worship, and identifiable Western businesses.
The security environment in Türkiye may change between now and Anzac Day. We recommend that New Zealanders travelling to Türkiye for the Anzac commemorations regularly monitor SafeTravel and our travel advice, which will be kept under close review in the lead-up to the event.
Consular staff from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be in Türkiye during the commemorative period to provide on-the-ground consular assistance, if required, to New Zealanders attending the Gallipoli commemorations.
For information on the type of consular assistance the New Zealand Government can and cannot provide, please read our When Things Go Wrong guidance.
Throughout this period, New Zealanders requiring consular assistance should contact the 24/7 Consular Emergency Line on +64 99 20 20 20. The emergency numbers in Türkiye are:
