There's a new SafeTravel registration site. The new site offers a quicker and easier experience for you to register travel details for you and your family, or for a group travelling together, like a sports team or tour group.
When you register your plans and contact details, we can send you travel updates about the places you're travelling to. This includes the regular general updates we make to our travel advisories, and also any specific safety or security alerts for locations you are travelling to.
Importantly, SafeTravel registration is the main way we'll communicate with you if a crisis happens while you're travelling. Whether it be civil unrest, natural disasters, or military conflict, we are only able to contact you if you have registered with us.
If the worst-case scenario hits while you are travelling, and we are able to help, SafeTravel registrants will be the first to get offers of assistance.
In addition to an improved user experience, the new registration site has some other benefits for users.
Now, when you register on SafeTravel, you’ll have more control over your personal data. You can delete personal data for anyone in your family at any time. Or, you can set it to be automatically deleted after you travel.
In the new registration site, your date of birth and passport number are not visible on your screen after you’ve saved them, which means that data stays between you and us, and not whoever might be looking over your shoulder when you access your account.
When you access your account, the new site offers new, more secure authentication methods. You can now register using your RealMe login, or create a passkey so you can log in with FaceID a fingerprint, or your device’s PIN. Find out more on the official RealMe website.
If you’re organising travel for a group or tour, you now have the ability to bulk upload participants. And if your group changes, you can just upload a new spreadsheet to update the group’s details in one quick and easy step. You can also set a local contact in New Zealand for the group.
If you had an account on the old SafeTravel registration site, your registered travel details will be brought across automatically. All you need to do is change your password when you first log in. Go to safetravel.govt.nz/login and click "Have trouble logging in". We’ll also be messaging SafeTravel users directly to advise them of this change and the steps they need to take.
Once you’ve logged in, it’s a good idea to check the details we have registered for you. Please open the Travellers tab and review details for each traveller, including how long you want your data kept in the system.
If you haven’t registered with us before, it’s quick and easy to set up an account and register your travel. Click the “Register” button at the top right of your screen, or go to safetravel.govt.nz/register.
