Overview

Ongoing civil unrest and armed conflict in the region are a significant threat to New Zealanders in Myanmar.

The Myanmar military assumed control of the country by a coup in 2021.  A state of emergency was declared and so there is an increased security presence and some areas are under martial law.

Many areas are significantly contested, including almost all border regions. Parts of Myanmar are under the effective control of anti-regime groups.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Myanmar should be aware of are:

  • Widespread political violence.
  • Widespread detentions, including of foreigners.
  • Violent attacks, some using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
  • Armed conflict between military forces, ethnic armed groups, and militias. These can result in kidnapping, death, or injury.
  • Bans on public gatherings and political activities including some media use
  • Night time curfews
  • The closure to foreigners of legal land crossings into Myanmar
  • Limited healthcare and access to medication

New Zealanders travelling or living in Myanmar should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.
