Ongoing civil unrest and armed conflict in the region are a significant threat to New Zealanders in Myanmar.
The Myanmar military assumed control of the country by a coup in 2021. A state of emergency was declared and so there is an increased security presence and some areas are under martial law.
Many areas are significantly contested, including almost all border regions. Parts of Myanmar are under the effective control of anti-regime groups.
