Exercise increased caution There are areas of Bolivia where higher advice levels apply. See regional advice below.

Overview

Significant protests and demonstrations have been taking place in La Paz since early May 2026. Civil unrest and highway blockades have spread across other cities in the western regions of the country. Violent clashes have occurred between protesters and police. The blockades have led to shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies across the country.

There are more significant safety or security concerns than you would usually find in New Zealand because of violent crime and civil unrest. Protests may occur at short notice and turn violent without warning.

Other things that New Zealanders travelling or living in Bolivia should be aware of are:

  • Crime - watch out for petty crime, such as theft, especially in urban centres, tourist areas, and on public transport.
  • Local laws - make sure that you get to know the local laws and customs, especially around drugs and medicines.
  • Health - there are risks of mosquito-borne illnesses and altitude sickness.

New Zealanders travelling or living in Bolivia should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.
